  • A ONE WOMAN SHOW

THE GIRL BEHIND THE GROGGY OWL

A self-taught artist and jewellery maker, Sarah Dizon Sowinski is the founder, designer and maker behind The Groggy Owl. The Groggy Owl is a handcrafted jewellery brand that believes in the importance of ethical fashion, committed to using recycled and locally-sourced materials whenever possible. Sarah completed her BA in International Development Studies, where she focused on ethical business practices and social responsibility. She is currently working on a post-grad in Business and Human Resources, with an emphasis on diversity, equity and inclusion.

I'm just a girl trying to spread a little joy, one handmade jewellery piece at a time. The Groggy Owl began with my passion for all things handmade, and a desire to get away from mass-produced, generic accessories.

Currently, The Groggy Owl is a one woman show. Meaning I do everything from product design, creation, photography, marketing, social media advertising, packaging, jewellery modelling, customer service - you name it!

Thanks so much for stopping by!

    Much love,

    Sarah

    FAQs

WHY THE NAME: 'THE GROGGY OWL'?

Oh. I like owls, and I’m always tired. The Groggy Owl is my side hustle, so a lot of my jewellery making happens in the middle of the night, or very early in the morning.

    WHAT IS ELECTROFORMING?

I use a variety of materials and techniques when creating pieces for The Groggy Owl. One of those techniques is the intricate process of electroforming. Making jewellery using this method is basically like art meets science. It’s essentially the process of transferring metal (in this case, copper) onto a conductive medium through electrodeposition.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY 'HAND-STAMPED'?

Many of my items are hand-stamped, meaning each letter or design was individually hammered by hand into the metal by yours truly! Because of this, there may be slight variations in the alignment and impressions. Not only is this just the nature of hand-stamped pieces - but it's also part of the charm!

HOW DO YOU MAKE YOUR 'ZERO WASTE' COLLECTION?

The process depends on which materials are used in each piece, whether it's upcycled plastic, fabric, paper, recycled metal or other misc. "re-claimed" materials. Visit my blog post on my upcycled process to learn more.
